Please note that starting from April 2024, Taroko Gorge National Park is closed due to earthquake damage until further notice. However, this closure should not deter travelers from visiting Hualien. The region offers numerous other attractions, beautiful coastal scenery, rich indigenous cultural experiences, delicious Hualien-style foods, and more—making it a worthwhile destination even without access to Taroko Gorge.

Best Areas to Stay in Hualien, Taiwan

There are three primary areas to stay in Hualien:

• City center, near the Dongdamen Night Market
• Near the railway/bus stations
• Qixingtan Beach

City Center Area

Staying in Hualien’s city center, particularly near the vibrant night market, offers travelers a blend of convenience and local cultural immersion. This bustling area puts you at the heart of the action, with easy access to Hualien’s best dining, shopping, and entertainment options. The famous Dongdamen Night Market comes alive every evening with a dazzling array of street food, shopping, and carnival-style Taiwanese games. 

Hualien’s railway/bus station is around a 35-minute walk from here, so you must get a taxi upon arrival to Hualien or rent a car/bike. *Please note that there are no ride-hailing services in Hualien.* However, you will be at the center of Hualien’s action once you are here. From your central accommodation, you’ll be within walking distance of charming cafes, traditional temples, and local shops, allowing you to experience the rhythm of daily life in Hualien.

Railway/Bus Station Area

When choosing where to stay in Hualien, accommodations near the railway and bus station offer travelers significant advantages, particularly those planning to explore beyond the city limits. This location provides convenience for arrivals, departures, and day trips. Staying here means you’re just steps away from inter-city trains and buses, making it simple to visit nearby attractions like Taroko National Park (hopefully open again soon!), Qixingtan Beach, or even scenic train day trips to other cities such as Yilan or Taitung.

The station area is also well-connected to the city center via the local bus, providing access to Hualien’s night markets and other urban attractions (although the night market is close enough to walk!). For travelers valuing efficiency and ease of movement, accommodation near the railway and bus station proves to be an easy choice that maximizes your time for exploration of Taiwan!

I chose to stay in this area for my three weeks in Hualien! Upon arrival, I rolled my suitcase from the railway station to my accommodation in Hualien, just five minutes down the road. Along the way, there are countless scooter rental shops, perfect for travelers with international driver’s licenses who would like to travel around the city or take on day trips up and down Taiwan’s east coast.

Qixingtan Beach Area

Choosing to stay at Qixingtan Beach offers travelers a tranquil retreat that showcases the natural beauty of Hualien’s shoreline. This crescent-shaped pebble beach, known for its stunning views of both the ocean and the mountains, provides a serene alternative to the city area of Hualien. This area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for cycling along scenic coastal paths, stargazing on clear nights, dolphin spotting, and waking up to colorful sunrises.

While slightly removed from the city center, Qixingtan provides easy access to Hualien’s attractions via a short drive or bus ride. Remember, there are no ride-hailing services in Hualien, so it is best to rent a car or bike to stay in this area. For travelers seeking a peaceful, nature-immersed experience, Qixingtan Beach is the ideal choice for your Hualien stay.
